KAMLOOPS – Tuesday morning (Aug. 19), the BC YMCA Kamloops put out posts on social media stating that programming at its John Tod Centre on the North Shore would be cancelled for the day due to a break-in that happened overnight.

“From a community centre perspective, this is a centre that’s used by the community in Kamloops for the very young and young families, to people who are in the last phase of their life. Today, the majority of programming was shuttered and will stay shuttered until the building is safe to be reoccupied,” said Colin Reid, vice-president of YMCA BC Kamloops.

The centre hosts two charitable organizations that hold programming. The Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops took the brunt of the vandalism, having windows smashed in its offices.

“Most of the damage has to do with the glass and with doors and, you know, ripping things off walls. It doesn’t appear as if there was a lot of theft. Just sheer vandalism,” said Reid.

Both organizations say this will impact programming schedules while they clean up, repair and replace damages.

“There are families who rely on the Y and the Boys and Girls Club to provide those services. We apologize if we’ve interrupted those. It’s difficult to run a charity at any time — it’s more difficult to run a charity when things are tight. Both of our organizations will have to take valuable resources to repair the buildings and the spaces and get them back in operation,” said Reid.

The RCMP stated that anyone with information about the break-in should call the detachment at (250) 828-3000.
