MONTE CREEK, B.C. — The long-awaited Monte Creek Fire Station will officially be opened on September 13, about four years after a fire claimed the life of a man whose family helped make it possible.

While the fire station is already operational, the TNRD will be hosting a grand opening event in just under four weeks time. The event will run between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 13, with a ribbon cutting scheduled for 11:15 a.m.

“We’re happy for the residents that this fire hall has been finished and appreciate the work that our staff have put in around fire protection facilities and operations,” said TNRD CAO Scott Hildebrand.

“A big thank-you goes out to Linda Herman and the late Ed Herman. Ed tragically passed away in the spring of 2021 and Linda upheld that donation. We will have a plaque at the property to recognize the Herman family and their generous contribution to this vision.”

Hildebrand also acknowledged former TNRD directors Mel Rothenburger and the late Ken Gillis for spearheading this project prior to the election of the current TNRD board.

Work to build the new fire station at 1257 Hook Road began in October last year, after residents voted in favour of a new fire protection area, which took effect in 2023. People in about 356 properties in the Monte Creek, Del Oro, Lafarge and Barnhartvale areas, east of Kamloops, will benefit from this new fire station.

The $2.25-million project included the purchase of a fire truck, a water tender and personal protective equipment for firefighters. Nearly half of those costs — $1 million — will be coming via a grant, with the TNRD borrowing the other $1.25 million over a 20-year period.

This past Thursday (Aug. 14), the TNRD board voted to spend up to $250,000 from the Canada Community Building Fund on additional capital costs at the new fire station. Money will go to an emergency backup generator ($90,000), asphalt paving ($120,000), exterior storage facilities ($30,000) and landscaping ($10,000).

Costs will be split equally with both Electoral Area “L” and Electoral Area “P” contributing up to $125,000.

“The works that are going to be done with these funds that we’re allocating today will bring the fire hall to the next step and make it a nice finished fire hall with lots of necessities that they need to operate it,” Area “L” Director Doug Haughton said.

“We didn’t have the money in the original budget and we decided to put it through this Community Building Fund. It’s going to be a beautiful set up once it’s all done.”
