KAMLOOPS — A two-year-long project to replace a sewer main on Tranquille Road will enter a new phase on Monday (Aug. 18).

According to the City of Kamloops, the expanded work zone will now encompass the area between Crestline Street and Downie Street. This phase of the project will also include the closure of Schreiner Street north of Tranquille Road until late fall.

“During this time, Tranquille Road will be open to local traffic only for driveway access, with limited access around the open excavation area,” a statement from the City of Kamloops said.

The city also noted that no through traffic will be permitted through the construction area and that access points for local traffic will “change frequently.”

As well, the city also said that starting Aug. 23, there will be restricted access at Schreiner Street south for about three weeks due to excavation work at the intersection with Tranquille Road.

“Eastbound traffic will be narrowed and slowed, with no westbound or northbound access,” the city added. “Residents are advised to move large vehicles (ie. trailers, boats) before August 23.”

“Completion of this portion is expected in early September, after which rough westbound access will reopen.”

Work along Tranquille Road began on June 9 and crews will take a break during the winter months. Construction will resume between Downie Street and Southill Street in the spring, and the entire multi-million project is scheduled to be done in the fall of next year.

While work is ongoing, the truck and dangerous goods route will remain along Ord Road. A detour route has also been set up for other vehicles along Parkcrest Avenue.

This third phase of sewer work along Tranquille Road also includes a number of surface improvements like new sidewalks and a new multi-use path on an “integral” east-west active transportation corridor that was identified in the city’s Transportation Master Plan.

The first phase of sewer work along Tranquille Road west of Crestline toward Kamloops Airport was completed in 2017, while the second phase between Southill Street and 12th Street was completed in 2021.
