KAMLOOPS — Rising international star Nova Kienast saved her best for last at the European Athletics Under-20 Championships this past weekend in Tampere, Finland.

Kienast, the 18-year-old German who trains at the Kamloops Track and Field Club, threw 67.93 metres on her sixth and final throw in the final to claim the gold medal.

Marie Rougetet, 19, of France earned the silver medal with a throw of 67.38m.

Kienast moved to Kamloops last September to train alongside Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg and under the tutelage of coach Dylan Armstrong, an Olympic bronze medallist shot putter.

She has since broken the under-18 women’s world record, throwing 78.16m with the three-kilogram implement in December in Mesa, Arizona.

“I’ve had metres of improvement, but also from the training I’ve learned quite a lot and my training has gotten more professional,” Kienast told CFJC Today in June when asked about training in the Tournament Capital.

Kienast broke the under-20 German female record in March in Kamloops, heaving the four-kilogram hammer 68.54m to pass a mark that stood for 25 years.

Adidas has hopped on board to sponsor Kienast, whose goals include becoming Olympic and world champion.

“I kind of got on their radar,” Kienast said. “It’s amazing. I love the brand and it’s pretty popular, too, so I’m kind of excited I’m sponsored by it.”
