COLLINS: How long is long enough?

THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE grind slowly but grind exceedingly fine. That saying, a paraphrase of an ancient Greek proverb, or an ancient Chinese philosopher — whoever you want to credit — says sometimes justice takes forever but it eventually happens.

That statement really doesn’t have relevance anymore. Maybe there was a time when it made some sense, but leaving someone dangling for a long period of time these days seems unfair. And there are laws in place to prevent that from happening, but there are still cases where wheels don’t seem to be moving at all.

A good example is the series of lawsuits involving our mayor and a city councillor. The charges basically have to do with defamation. There have been several different delays, a number of them created by changes in legal representation by the mayor. Some of these changes have occurred just prior to court dates.

Obviously, the counsel needs time to get up to speed. But is this fair? Is it a ploy to delay the trial? Is it just the way things turned out?
