SRD K9’s of BC geared up with new GPS tracking collars donated by family of missing woman

KAMLOOPS — The Search, Recovery and Detection K9s of BC, a provincial non-profit based in Kamloops, was recently able to upgrade the technology used in search operations, thanks to a donation made by a family volunteers worked with in the past.

The group now has two GPS tracking collars for their dog teams, which were donated in honour of Shannon White, a Kamloops woman missing since November of 2021. Mike Ritcey with the SRD K9s says White’s father, Gerald White, recently gifted the team with the technology to help search for Shannon and anybody who goes missing.

“We can put them on the dogs and they have a GPS, and it shows where the dog has worked and where we are so we can write off a search area and look at a map, and we’ll keep it all logged to say, ‘Okay, we’ve searched this area pretty hard. Let’s move on to another area’.”

The agency already keeps track of areas its searchers have been in, but from a strategic perspective, Ritcey says having more specific documentation of which locations the dogs have gone through is a huge asset.

“It’s incredible,” said Ritcey. “You know, you’re not overlapping, you’re not searching the same area. Because when the years go by, you think, ‘Jeez I’ve been here before,’ and now all you have to do is just go on the computer and see, ‘Yeah, we have been here before’ so we’ll move on.”

The search organization is led by volunteers, and is also looking to raise money for its operations and training at an upcoming fundraiser. The SRD K9’s Summer Dog Lovers’ Market will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on August 17, at the Cooper Centre on Windsor Avenue.
