Special air quality statement reissued for Kamloops-area

KAMLOOPS — A special air quality statement has been reissued for the Kamloops area less than a day after the previous alert was lifted.

The advisory covers the South Thompson and the Fraser Canyon, and it was issued by Environment Canada and the BC Ministry of Environment and Parks around 10:15 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 3).

The previous alert for the South Thompson, the Fraser Canyon, and parts of the Cariboo was ended just after 4:00 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 2).

According to the latest alert, people in Kamloops, Rayleigh, Monte Creek, Cache Creek, Spences Bridge, Logan Lake as well in the Fraser Canyon are being impacted or are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours.

A similar advisory also covers the Duncan area on Vancouver Island from Ladysmith to Shawnigan Lake.

“During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour,” the alert said.

“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”

There have been a number of new fire starts because of thunderstorms in recent days, though the full impact of Saturday’s (Aug. 2) on again, off again thunderstorm has yet to reveal itself.

Environment Canada has issued new thunderstorm watches for a large part of the B.C. Interior from the U.S. border all the way to the border with the Northwest Territories. The alert covers a number of areas including the South Thompson, the Nicola, the Shuswap, and the Okanagan.
