Heat warning lifted but Kamloops-area temperatures to remain above seasonal

KAMLOOPS — The first heat warning of 2025 has ended, but temperatures in the Kamloops-area are expected to be above seasonal heading into the August long weekend.

The heat warning issued on Monday (July 28) was ended just before 4:00 a.m. Friday (Aug. 1) morning, as Environment Canada says the forecast no longer meets the heat warning threshold.

Environment Canada is currently forecasting a daytime high of 31 C Friday, 32 C Saturday, 31 C Sunday as well as 28 C on Monday of the long weekend. Overnight lows are expected to range between 15 C and 19 C Friday to Monday night.

According to Environment Canada, the normal daytime high for Aug. 1 in Kamloops is 29 C, while the normal overnight low is 14 C.

In the Kamloops-area, a heat warning is issued when there are two straight days with a daytime high of at least 35 C with a nighttime low of at least 18 C in between. In the North Thompson and the Cariboo, a warning is issued if there are two straight days with a daytime high of at least 29 C with a nighttime low of at least 14 C in between.

As of publishing, the only weather alert in effect in southern B.C. was a special air quality statement for the Fraser Canyon as well as parts of the South Thompson. It was issued on Tuesday (July 29) because of the Cantilever Bar fire near Lytton.

The recent spell of hot weather coupled with dry lightning has led to a surge in wildfire activity in the province. The BC Wildfire Service says about half of the roughly 120 fires currently burning were sparked in the last 24 hours.

It notes the hot and dry conditions have left fuels “extremely susceptible to ignition.” It’s prompted the Provincial Government to urge people to stay informed about wildfire conditions this long weekend.
