KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service says one of two wildfires burning in the Heffley Creek area north of Kamloops has grown to nearly five hectares in size.

Information Officer Taylor Stewart Shantz says there was a bit of growth on the Lyons Creek fire, which is located between Lyons Lake and Heffley-Louis Creek Road.

“Crews remained on site overnight keeping an eye on that fire and we did have our night vision helicopter actioning that one as well,” Stewart Shantz told CFJC Today. “[Thursday], we have four crews returning to the site to continue to work on that objective.”

Stewart Shantz says the fire has been burning rank 1 and rank 2, and cautions fire behaviour may increase as temperatures rise.

“We are expecting pretty significant heat and a little bit of instability so we could see some wind later throughout the day,” she said. “Crews will continue to just evaluate the situation as it evolves and make decisions based on that.”

A wildfire service crew is also working on a second fire that is burning west of Lyons Lake, which is still estimated to be 0.1 hectares in size.

“There is a four-person crew actioning that fire and we have not seen any growth there,” Stewart Shantz said. “We’re continuing to evaluate that and we’ll action it throughout the day.”

There are no related evacuation alerts or orders in place from the Thompson Nicola Regional District.

The two fires are also both not currently impacting Heffley-Louis Creek Road which is the main access route into Sun Peaks.

“Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality and Sun Peaks Fire Rescue are aware of and monitoring two out-of-control wildfires west of Sun Peaks,” a statement from the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality said.

“While there is no direct threat to Sun Peaks, we understand there may be some concern from residents and guests traveling Heffley-Louis Creek Road.”

Both these fires are suspected to be lightning caused.
