LYTTON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the measured size of a fire that ignited south of Lytton Monday (July 28) is expected to grow in the near future.

The Cantilever Bar fire started Monday afternoon about 10 kilometres south of Lytton, on the west bank of the Fraser River near a rail right-of-way.

The fire quickly grew to 150 hectares — and that is still the recorded size Tuesday, though officials say that will likely grow when the smoke clears and the perimeter track is updated. Caused by human activity, the blaze is classified as out of control.

BCWS has 24 firefighters building guards and dousing flames Tuesday, along with structural protection crews assessing the surrounding area and setting up sprinklers. They are being supported by three helicopters supplying water, transporting gear and surveying the scene.
