ONE MAN'S OPINION

COLLINS: Trust in others is waning

Jul 24, 2025 | 6:18 AM

TRUST IS A WORD that is used more and more in a negative sense than a positive one.

We put a lot less trust, for example, in the news comments that inundate us every day. If it’s FOX News, do we believe the content more or less than if it came from another source? I tend to trust certain sites over others.

Obviously, because I know most of them personally, I trust our local media, within reason of course. I know many of their biases, just as they know mine. I trust their integrity because I know them.

Locally, I trust the people at CFJC Today. I trust our local CBC staff. I have worked alongside them for many years. I read InfoNews and Castanet and I like reading the stories in the Wren.

On the larger front, it’s much harder to find someone to be confident in, particularly on social media.

There are few social media sites that are worth reading. If you want to read anything, try to pick sites that are respected, even if their opinion is different from yours. Pick sites that will give you a variety of opinions so you can make an informed decision.

I read as much as I can from B.C. media. The Globe and Mail.is on my list among media based in our country. I get a lot of great analysis from the CBC and BBC, and the Royal Times of London.

The list goes on, but the point is this; social media has opened many new doors and opportunities to broaden our horizons. But there are at least as many negative sites as positive ones. Many sites will defraud you of your life savings or misinform you with lies and half-truths. More than ever, you have to be careful.

If you’re not sure, delete. If it’s a legitimate contact, they will call back. and your private information has a better chance of actually staying private.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
