100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A 27-year-old man from Kelowna was fined for speeding through the Cariboo region and failing to notice a police officer who tried to stop him.

BC Highway Patrol says the man was alone in a grey BMW sedan at around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday (July 16) when he was clocked going 145 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on Highway 97 near 83 Mile House.

In a news release issued Tuesday (July 22), Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says a fully uniformed officer stepped onto the highway to stop the BMW, but the driver didn’t notice them, saying he was “reading a text message.” A second officer then stopped the BMW.

“RCMP officers are in the process of transitioning to body cameras and when you drive by police, your actions will likely be recorded,” McLaughlin says. “We are grateful the driver eventually stopped. This was a dangerous situation that could have ended much worse for both the police officers and the driver.”
