KAMLOOPS — Kamloops no longer has the highest crime rate of any city in Canada, albeit not by much.

According to new numbers released by Statistics Canada Tuesday (July 22), police reported 10,546 crimes per 100,000 population in Kamloops in 2024, the third highest number reported in any census metropolitan area in Canada. Kamloops’ crime rate is drastically down from the 13,116 recorded in 2023.

Chilliwack took the crime rate title from Kamloops with 11,352 crimes per 100,000 population reported in 2024. Red Deer, Alberta was marginally ahead of Kamloops for second with a crime rate of 10,650.

Kamloops saw another drop in violent crime year-over-year. Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index — which assigns weights to crime categories based on lengths of court sentences — shows a decline of 21 per cent in violent crime from 2023.
