COLLINS: It would be so nice if seniors could catch a break.

INTERESTING THAT A NUMBER of critical medical procedures cannot be done outside a clinic.

Seniors are finding that they are on the outside looking in when it comes to a number of critical procedures. We can do portable ultrasounds, x-rays, blood work, some scans, and we have started to do dental work in some care homes.

One of the procedures that is still way behind is the ability to do eye examinations. There are a couple of places operating in the Lower Mainland, but I could find nothing anywhere else. A simple eye test is a no-brainer, but it’s much tougher to bring specialized equipment into a care facility or a residence.

I guess if you are completely bedbound, you would have to take an ambulance to the eye clinic and somehow get into a position to take the test. It’s just another example of the government ignoring the needs of the seniors and disabled.

I’m sure help is on the way, but I really don’t expect it to happen anytime soon, People who are seniors or infirm are just too far down the priority list.

The government is paying lip service to some of these needs, but I fear any real solution is a long way off. So those who are immobile will continue to decline and those who need extensive care will wait until it’s too late.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
