KAMLOOPS — Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc says there will be impacts to traffic as around two months of work to extend a multi-use pathway along East Shuswap Road is getting underway.

In a statement, the band said crews will be working between the 500 and 600 block of East Shuswap Road from July until September.

“Construction activities will be focused between Sun Rivers Drive and the Sienna Ridge development,” Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc said. “Local residential traffic will be impacted.”

“Temporary closures of the eastbound lane will result in managed single lane alternating traffic around the construction site. Some delays are expected.”

Tk’emlúps said there will be signs set up in the area and flaggers on scene who will help guide vehicles through the roughly one kilometre long work site.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation with traffic management measures to ensure the safety of both residents and construction crews,” the Tk’emlúps statement added.

The multi-use pathway extension along East Shuswap Road has been in the works for a number of years, and the project was the recipient of an active transportation grant last summer.

“It will provide safe access within Tk’emlups Reserve with year-round [active transportation] infrastructure,” a June 2024 statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said.

“Local residents and recreational users, band offices, school and local developments will be connected.”

Tk’emlúps also got funding last year to plan for a new multi-use path from Sienna Ridge to Lafarge, a roughly 16 kilometre stretch along East Shuswap Road.

“This project is to complete a feasibility assessment, which will tie into the Shuswap multi-use pathway at Sienna Ridge and terminates at Lafarge,” the Ministry statement added.
