KAMLOOPS — The vibes were very good for the newly-formed Kamloops Vibe as they took home a silver medal in their very first appearance at BC Ball Hockey Provincials this year.

The Vancouver Whalers may have won last Sunday’s (July 13) gold medal game 3-0, but the Vibe’s efforts at the tournament earned them a berth a ‘B’ Nationals next season. A location for next year’s nationals has yet to be announced.

The Kamloops team was put together after the Kamloops Ball Hockey Association’s co-ed Rec League took off in popularity. They’re named after the Female Senior A Hockey team, which plays in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League.

The Vibe fell 2-0 to the Vancouver Tropic Thunder, drew the Whalers 1-1, and beat the Kelowna Black Panthers 5-0 to finish third in the four-team round-robin stage. It set up a semi-final showdown with the Tropic Thunder, which the Vibe took 2-1 in overtime.

Desiree Sonneson scored the overtime winner with 16 seconds left to play in the extra period.

Vibe goaltender Susan Sanford was also named the top goaltender of the tournament.

Elsewhere, the Kamloops Bohnefide Blackjacks fell in the semi-finals of the men’s ‘A’ division tournament. They were beaten 5-2 by the Victoria Devils, who went on to win provincial gold for the second consecutive season.

The Blackjacks qualified for playoffs after they finished second in their group following wins over the Misfits (5-1) and the Vikings (10-0) as well as a 4-3 loss to the Valley Stars, who took home the silver medal.

The Kamloops Rivershore Kings – who won the ‘B’ division title last season – did not make the playoff round. The Kings were beaten 9-2 by the Devils, tied the Hounds 3-3, and beat the Tri-City Bruins 6-3 to finish third in their group at provincials.
