KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Performing Arts Centre and arena multi-plex projects took another legislative step forward on Tuesday (July 15).

City Council voted 8-1 in favour of approving the borrowing bylaw for both projects totaling $275 million, Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson was alone in his opposition.

Hamer-Jackson, as he has during previous meetings, asked again about potential grant funding for the projects.

“We will be actively seeking out any opportunities that are presented. With the recent federal election we haven’t heard of anything specifically from that end yet. We will be looking to secure whatever funds we might be able to find,” said CAO Byron McCorkell.

The projects received public assent last year through an alternative approval process, which was unsuccessfully challenged in BC Supreme Court.

Construction is scheduled to begin this year on the performing arts centre, with work on the arena multi-plex expected to begin in 2026.
