KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says construction work along a block of Seymour Street downtown is expected to wrap by early next week.

Crews are working to install a new duct for Telus and Rogers that will wrap around the site of the future Kamloops Centre for the Arts, with that project then expected to begin construction this year.

“[It’s] so that we can later decommission and remove the fibre that runs through the middle of the site,” Adam Gordon, the City’s Project Delivery Manager told CFJC Today.

“Telus has been working closely with us on this effort and will be splicing and pulling new fibre after we have installed the ducts.”

The utility work has Seymour Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue down to one lane – the left lane – which is leading to slowdowns on the major thoroughfare especially during peak times.

“We anticipate that the current work along Seymour will be complete either towards the end of this week or early next week,” Gordon added, noting the utility project will be done in phases.

“The conduit will need to return down 4th Avenue before it can return to the existing Telus fibreway.”

Work along 4th Avenue between Seymour Street and St. Paul Street is expected to take place around the time crews working on a sewer main replacement project downtown reach that block. They began work between Lansdowne Street and Victoria Street on July 7.

The entire utility project is expected to be done in about six to eight weeks, while the sewer work along 4th Avenue is expected to wrap up at Battle Street by November.

Gordon said while the utility project is being done by the 4th Avenue team – BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. – is part of and being financed by the Kamloops Centre for the Arts project.
