KAMLOOPS — With school out for the summer, parks and playgrounds around Kamloops are a popular destination for kids and families, and they’re also a daily stop for the Bright Red Book Bus.

This summer marks 11 years of the book bus, which offers free reading materials to kids around the city. The program is a joint collaboration between the Kamloops-Thompson School District, BGC Kamloops, Literacy in Kamloops. The idea behind the colourful bus and activities that come with it is to bolster literacy in a fun environment.

“We know that they’re working really hard throughout the school year to try and get really good at their reading skills but this is just to bring back that joy, that love of reading, and get them excited about books again,” says Literacy in Kamloops program coordinator Jodi Lebourdais.

It takes a combination of donations, and fundraising to stock the shelves with fresh reading materials, alongside gently used books that are dropped off by community members. All told, the Bright Red Book Bus puts more than 3,000 books into the hands of young readers every summer.

“This is one of the programs that benefits from our Raise a Reader campaign that we do annually. It is one of our biggest and only fundraising campaigns. It funds almost 100 per cent of the programs with Literacy in Kamloops. And we see all of that money raised coming back into the community.”

The Bright Red Book Bus is set up at two different parks Monday through Friday, until August 15.
