Highway 1 to close at Tank Hill once again as crews work on new road bridge

Jul 7, 2025 | 12:41 PM

LYTTON, B.C. — There will be another overnight closure on the Trans-Canada Highway at Tank Hill as crews work to build a new bridge over the existing rail line.

The highway will be closed in both directions between 12:01 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Tuesday (July 8) to allow crews to pour concrete on the new structure over the CPKC railway line.

Checkpoints will be set up at Lytton and Spences Bridge with information on alternate routes.

“During the stoppage, the intersections of highways 1 and 12, and highways 1 and 8 will be closed, and vehicles will not be allowed through,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said in a statement.

“The Gladwin area and Nicomen River Road will remain accessible to local traffic. All other traffic will be detoured via Highway 12, Highway 5 and Highway 97D, with traffic-control guidance provided on portable message boards in Lillooet, Ashcroft and Cache Creek.”

A Ministry spokesperson told CFJC Today that this work was initially scheduled to take place on June 24, but it was postponed.

There will be provisions made for emergency vehicles to access the area while the highway is closed. As well, drivers travelling between the Interior and Lower Mainland are being told to use either Highway 3 or Highway 5 as alternative routes.

This is the latest in a series of closures on that stretch of Highway 1 as crews continue to work on repairs following the atmospheric river from Nov. 2021.

Outside of these full closures, drivers are being told to watch for intermittent closures and single lane alternating traffic as required. In those instances, there could be delays of up to 40 minutes to accomodate train traffic and other construction work.

Construction on the Tank Hill project is expected to be complete this November. For the latest on the project, go here.
