KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 5:30 p.m.): Kamloops firefighters made quick work on an an interface fire that sparked in the Rose Hill area Sunday (July 6) afternoon.

Firefighters were called out around 3:40 p.m., and Kamloops Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc said they had things under control around a half an hour later.

“Station 3 was in quarters when the call came in and they’re just below Rose Hill Road so they had a very quick response,” Uzeloc said. “It was about 0.1 to 0.2 of a hectare in size, and crews surrounded it and had it contained fairly quickly.”

The fire was in the vicinity of the Hidden Valley Mobile Home Park, and Uzeloc said the BC Wildfire Service deployed a supervisor and an initial attack crew to the assist Kamloops Fire Rescue.

He said the fire is suspected to be human caused, but a more specific cause is not known at this time.

“We don’t have an investigator available until tomorrow but BC Wildfire is doing a bit of an investigation while they’re on scene to see if they can see it,” Uzeloc said. “We haven’t had any lightning recently so I’m going to venture to say its most likely human caused, but what that entails we’ll have to wait for an investigation to determine.”

Uzeloc said crews will remain on scene for a while to create a guard around the fire and mop up hot spots as needed.

“We’re getting rain off and on but as you can see with some of the fires we’ve had over the last couple of weeks, it is still very easy to start a fire and they can still move fairly quickly,” Uzeloc said. “We’re asking for extra caution when you’re out doing things or when you’re walking through the bush or on the trails.”

“Make sure that you’re not doing anything that might cause a fire. Even though you think we’ve had some moisture we’re still very dry and it doesn’t take much for a large fire to start.”
