CHASE, B.C — There is more good news for people east of Kamloops as the Scatchard Mountain Fire is now classified as under control.

That means that suppression efforts on the 33.4 hectare fire that sparked on Monday (June 30) have ensured that flames will not spread beyond the current perimeter. The fire was classified as ‘being held’ on Tuesday evening.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is still maintaining an active presence on this fire, as it is still burning.

“Today, there are 38 firefighting personnel continuing mop up efforts,” a statement from the BC Wildfire Service said. “Air support is on standby and will be engaged as needed to support crew’s efforts as we move into the heat of the day.”

“During the overnight period, BCWS had two Initial Attack crews on site to patrol and conduct mop up.”

The Neskonlith Indian Band is expected to further downgrade an evacuation alert for around 40 properties on IR #2. Residents were ordered out Monday afternoon and they were allowed to return home Wednesday.

Neskonlith Kukpi7 Irwin Wai told CFJC Today that the band is monitoring the situation as crews are still doing mop-up work on the fire.

“It’s looking really good,” Wai said of the situation. “I think we’ve got it contained. “It was a great effort by all the parties involved who responded to the incident that could have been very serious.”

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is also expected to downgrade an evacuation alert that covered nine properties in the Harper Lake area which was also issued Monday evening.

“Co-operation amongst all the agencies and involved communities was high functioning and bore a successful result,” the Village of Chase added in a statement Thursday. “This is the last update from the Village pending any increased incident activity.”
