KAMLOOPS — Interior Health says there are no active measles cases within its jurisdiction, a little over a week after a myriad of infections were confirmed – including one case in Kamloops – which prompted a public notification of potential exposure.

In an emailed statement, Medical Health Officer Dr. Fatemeh Sabet told CFJC Today that as of Thursday (July 3), Interior Health had seen eight cases of the measles, but none of them are considered infectious any longer.

In addition to Kamloops, measles infections were recorded in Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Vernon, and the Nelson area.

Sabet said Interior Health is still investigating the potential for additional cases as measles continues to circulate elsewhere in this province. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), there have been 87 total measles cases reported this year, and just six cases in Northern Health are currently considered active.

Summer travel habits has also prompted the health authority to issue a reminder to the public to check their immunization status, and to get the measles vaccine if you haven’t already.

Sabet adds people who have received two doses of the measles vaccine have an extremely low risk of contracting measles as the vaccines provides nearly 100 per cent protection.

Asked about the status of Royal Inland Hospital(RIH) in relation to the recent measles infection, Interior Health said that infection prevention and control protocols are in place for patients who come to the hospital with suspected – or confirmed measles – infections, to prevent transmission to other patients and staff.

With that in mind, IH said people who have measles symptoms should call 8-1-1 for an assessment, and to wear a mask when visiting a healthcare facility to avoid spreading measles to other people.
