Stankoven signs record-setting NHL deal, aims to reward parents

KAMLOOPS — Logan Stankoven plans to repay parents Wes and Deana for investing in him after signing a life-changing contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this week.

“The money they’ve spent on me and the time they’ve taken out of their lives to help me reach my goals … now it’s going to be me giving back to them and helping them out in any way possible,” Stankoven said.

Stankoven, 22, signed an eight-year, US $48-million contract, with an average annual value of US $6-million – the richest NHL deal ever signed by a born-and-bred Kamloopsian.

The 5-foot-8 forward had 14 goals and 38 points in 78 games last season, including nine points in 19 games after a March trade to Carolina from the Dallas Stars.

Five goals and eight points in 15 playoff games for the ‘Canes helped boost his stock ahead of free agency.

Stankoven has one more year remaining on his entry-level contract and could have opted to attempt to boost his value with another strong season.

He weighed risks such as injury and an unexpected down campaign and said obtaining lifetime financial security now was the prudent decision.

“It just goes back to having that security of being guaranteed that money now,” said Stankoven, noting negotiations with Carolina took place smoothly over two days. “I still think I can get to another level and keep getting better as a player. So, I’ll keep doing that. But it’s great to have the contract talks out of the way now and I don’t need to worry about that financial side of things.”

Stankoven said his agent recommended a financial advisor when he began his professional career.

“He’s done a great job with my money,” Stankoven said. “Hopefully, he keeps that up.”

Stankoven’s new contract kicks in during the 2026-2027 season.

“I’d like to definitely give back in some way, whether it’s charities or different foundations,” he said. “And you don’t forget your roots, so that’ll definitely be in the back of my mind.”

“In terms of a lake house or fun stuff like that, I’ll have to think about that first and talk about that with my family.”
