Evacuation alerts and order remain for Izman Creek fire near Lytton; conditions steady at Scatchard Mountain fire near Chase

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) activated its emergency operations centre (EOC) on Monday (June 30), after the Scatchard Mountain Fire near Chase was first reported.

While that fire is currently being held, the TNRD EOC team is also monitoring a pair of wildfires near Lytton – one of the west side of the Fraser River and the other further north.

The Neskonlith Indian Band has downgraded its evacuation order for IR #2, which was put in place after the Scatchard Mountain fire, to an alert.

“It is currently classified as being held, which means given the current wind conditions and fire behavior it is expected to remain inside the fire perimeter,” said Cali Nessman, a BCWS Fire Information Officer. “Last night we had two initial attack crews on site doing patrol and mop up and today we have a unit crew as well as a contract crew onsite to continue mop up.”

The TNRD has left its evacuation alert that covered nine properties near Chase in place, but that could soon change.

“There are a handful of permanent residents out there,” said Colton Davies, TNRD EOC Communications Director. “When the alert did go in place we had staff there that where talking to people one-on-one making sure they were aware of the alert ready to go just incase. But based on the fire response we are optimistic with hopefully being able to downgrade that soon.”

The TNRD did downgrade an evacuation order for two properties near the Nikaia Creek fire near Lytton to an all clear.

The Izman Creek fire, located between Lytton and Lillooet along Highway 12, remains the most active in region at an estimated at 100 hectares in size.

“For the Izman Creek fire, which sparked up during the afternoon on Canada Day, we do have three properties on evacuation order and nine on evacuation alert at this time. We aren’t anticipating any changes to the status of those, obviously that fire is out of control,” said Davies.

The Lytton First Nation also has an evacuation alert in place for the Spintlum Flats 3, Lytton 3A and Lytton 32 reserves.

BC Wildfire kept a number of key resources on that fire throughout the evening, including structural protection.

“There are currently three initial attack crews, a unit crews, as well as two support personnel onsite,” added Nessman.

The fire danger rating in Kamloops is currently moderate to high. The Kamloops Fire Centre has seen 84 wildfires since April 1, slightly below average for this time of year.

“The ten year average from April 1 to today is 93 wildfires and over 7,000 hectares burned,” stated Nessman.
