LYTTON — (UPDATE 8:45 p.m.): The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has issued new evacuation orders and alerts in the Lytton-area as a second wildfire continues to burn along Highway 12.

It has ordered the evacuation of three addressed properties along Lytton-Lillooet Hwy 12 in Electoral Area “I” due to the 25 hectare Izman Creek wildfire.

Another nine properties in the area have also been put on evacuation alert due to the fire, which is about 16 kilometres northeast of Lytton.

The BC Wildfire Service said it has multiple ground crews and aerial resources battling this human caused wildfire.

“It is displaying Rank 2 and Rank 3 fire behaviour meaning a surface fire with visible, open flame, infrequent candling and slow to moderate rate of spread,” a statement from the BC Wildfire Service said.

The wildfire has forced the overnight closure of Highway 12 between Lytton and Lillooet to all non-local traffic. An update is expected from DriveBC at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday (July 2).

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the Nikaia Creek fire is still estimated to be 5.73 hectares in size. It was sparked Monday (June 30) night and its burning out of control on the west side of the Fraser River, not too far from the Lytton Ferry, which remains operational.

BC Wildfire Service crews remained on site overnight Monday with around a dozen ground crews responding along with one helicopter.

“The west flank of the fire was burning in grassy fuel types which have mostly burnt out. Crews are focusing along the north flank of the fire, establishing hose lay and using direct attack methods on the fire’s edge,” a statement from the BC Wildfire Service said.

“Structure protection assessments are being conducted. Lytton First Nation is supporting crews with a water tender for water delivery to the fire. They also have a crew conducting proactive fuel mitigation work on properties in the vicinity of the fire.”

In addition to the evacuation order from the TNRD, the Lytton First Nation has issued an evacuation alert for the Papyum 27, Papyum 27A, Lytton 27B and Nohomeen 23 reserves.
