MONTE CREEK, B.C. — The Thompson-Nicola Regional Director (TNRD) Director for the Monte Creek area says he’s pleased to see the new fire station nearing completion.

According to the TNRD, the building envelope was recently completed and construction itself is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks

Doug Haughton told CFJC Today that when completed, the new fire station will provide fire protection to about 356 properties in Monte Creek, Del Oro, Lafarge, and Barnhartvale, east of Kamloops.

“I’m glad to see it happen and get going and finalized,” he said. “It’s going to good for everybody and it adds positive part of a working group to the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.”

Work to build the new fire station at 1257 Hook Road began in October last year, after residents voted in favour of a new fire protection area, which took effect in 2023. Volunteers in Monte Creek have been working in partnership with the existing Pritchard department as they wait for the new fire station to be built.

“”It’s something that started prior to Lee Morris’ and my term on the TNRD board as the late Ken Gillis, who represented this area as well as Mel Rothenburger and others worked hard to get the boundaries extended form Pritchard to include the Monte Creek area,” Haughton said.

“As well, the nice gesture from the Herman family. It’s sad to see that we lost Ed in a fire but they were generous to donate that land and its finally all come together.”

The $2.25 million project also includes the purchase of a fire truck, a water tender, and personal protective equipment for firefighters. Nearly half of those costs – $1 million – will be coming via a grant, and the TNRD will borrow the other $1.25 million over a period of 20 years.

While the TNRD says more information will be coming at a later date, Haughton said an official grand opening is is expected to take place this September.

“I think its a very welcome sign for the residents that are being added to it,” Haughton said. “I know I’ve heard from various residents whether it be Del Oro or up Highway 97 saying ‘when’s the fire station opening? Whens the fire station opening?'”

“I know its coming. It’s close.”
