Jun 26, 2025 | 6:26 PM

KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 7:45 p.m.): A relatively large grassfire that broke out in the area of Peterson Creek Park Thursday (June 26 ) evening is being held at 3.07 hectares in size.

That means that the fire that sparked in the hills near Glenfair Drive and the Xget’tem Trail is expected to remain within its current perimeter, based on current fuel and weather conditions.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire is believed to be human caused, though no other details are available yet.

Witnesses on the ground told CFJC Today that the fire was sparked around 5:40 p.m. Thursday. It sent a huge plume of smoke into the Kamloops sky, and was visible from the Trans-Canada Highway that passes near the area as well as from nearby Royal Inland Hospital.

“No structures or critical infrastructure are threatened and we’re going to manage this fire overnight to make sure that all the hotspots are actioned,” KFR Deputy Chief Ryan Cail told CFJC Today.

Cail said two BC Wildfire Service initial attack crews joined Kamloops Fire Rescue crews to fight this blaze.

“Residents are asked to avoid this area and trails while crews are scene,” the City of Kamloops statement said in a statement. “Please continue to stay away from the area while work continues.”

“Thank you to the BC Wildfire Service for their quick response and assistance.”
