KAMLOOPS — A single case of measles has been confirmed in Kamloops.

Interior Health says it’s the first confirmed measles case within its jurisdiction in 2025, although there have been other cases around the province that may impact interior residents as they travel during the summer.

In a news release issued Tuesday (June 24), Interior Health says it’s contact tracing and following up directly with individuals who are known to have been exposed. The risk to the broader public is considered low.

However, residents at the following locations during the times listed below may have been exposed:

  • Shoppers Drug Mart – 1210 Summit Dr. June 16 between 9:30 p.m. and 11:35 p.m.
  • Denny’s Restaurant – 570 Columbia St. – June 16 between 12:00 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.
  • Aberdeen Mall – 1320 Trans Canada Highway – June 16 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Earls Kitchen + Bar – 1210 Summit Dr. – June 16 between 6:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
  • Castles and Cottages – 347 Victoria St. – June 18 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Individuals exposed to the measles virus are asked to monitor for symptoms that may develop up to three weeks after being exposed. Interior Health says symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that usually starts on the face and spreads rapidly down to the rest of the body.

The health authority warns that measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air. People can pass the virus to others before they show symptoms, and the virus can stay suspended in the air in the room for several hours.

Adults, children and infants can get measles vaccinations for free from their local health centre or some family physicians and nurses and pharmacies. Children over the age of four and adults can get vaccinated at a pharmacy as well.
