Kamloops sports fields closed Monday night due to ‘significant’ weekend rain

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says the ongoing spell of wet weather has forced it to close to majority of its sports fields Monday (June 23) evening.

“Due to the significant amount of rain accumulated over the weekend and today, all City fields will be closed tonight,” the City said in a brief statement. “The current conditions have made the fields unsafe for play, and this measure is necessary to prevent any damage.”

The exception will be Hillside Stadium, which has turf and not a natural grass playing field.

At this time, its not clear if the sports fields will reopen on Tuesday or if the closure will be extended into this week.

Environment Canada is calling for a 60 percent chance of showers with risk of a thunderstorm Monday, a 30 per cent chance of showers on Tuesday, and a 40 per cent of showers Wednesday.

There is more rain in the forecast on Thursday night as well as on Friday this week.

Monday’s closure comes as all soccer fields at McArthur Island were due to be closed for nearly two weeks of maintenance between June 23 and July 2, as the city prepares to host a pair of provincial tournaments next month.
