Contractor picked as Kamloops prepares for ‘critical’ surface work on Overlanders Bridge

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops had picked the company that will be tasked with completing essential rehabilitation work on the Overlanders Bridge, which will get underway next month.

It has contracted River Valley Construction Services Ltd. following an RFP process that closed last month. Work on the bridge and the adjacent multi-use pathway is expected last until the fall.

“We thank all Kamloops residents and visitors for their patience and understanding as we invest in this critical infrastructure upgrade to ensure long-term safety and functionality for all users,” Wayne Lockhart, the City’s Civic Construction Manager, said in a statement.

Lockhart said the project will address “deteriorating surface conditions that are beginning to affect the safety of both the bridge deck and the multi-usepathway.”

Crews will remove and replace concrete and asphalt at “select” bridge joint locations, as the project will not include a total resurfacing of the bridge deck. They will also apply a sand-textured epoxy coating on the pathway to improve safety and durability.

At this time, its not clear what the impacts to traffic will be, as those details are still being finalized. While there will be various lane closures, the City said there will be at least one lane of open in each direction to help minimize disruptions on the major thoroughfare that spans the Thompson River.

The multi-use pathway will be closed while work on it takes place, and there will be a detour route set up for cyclists and pedestrians. Those details will be released once it has been finalized, the City said.

“Although there will be some short-term inconveniences, these maintenance efforts will provide a benefit for bridge commuters and multi-use-path users for years to come,” Lockhart added.

People are being told to expect delays while crossing the Overlanders Bridge and to allow extra travel time. They’re also being urged to use alternate routes – the Halston bridge – whenever possible.

More details like specific construction schedules, detour routes, and updates on lane changes, will be released in the coming weeks.
