Overnight snowfall expected for Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, Okanagan Connector

MERRITT, B.C. — The first night of summer solstice could bring overnight flurries to some Interior highways.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada says around four centimetres of snow is expected to fall on the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt and the Okanagan Connector between Merritt and Kelowna between Friday (June 20) night and Saturday afternoon. A similar special weather statement is also in effect on Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton.

It’s due to an “upper disturbance” over the southern Interior that also triggered a severe thunderstorm watch for Kamloops and area. Along with widespread showers, the weather agency says wet snow is possible over highway summits.

“Because of the convective nature of the system, snow levels may temporarily lower to 1,200 to 1,600 metres as intense bands of precipitation move through,” Environment Canada stated. “Snowfall accumulations will be highly variable depending on elevation.”
