KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 3:15 p.m.): Kamloops RCMP have confirmed that the shutdown at the law courts this morning was due to a bomb threat, though they say no explosives were found.

In an update, RCMP Const. Sofie Winkels said police swarmed the courthouse around 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning (June 19) and evacuated it out of an abundance of caution.

“Kamloops RCMP along with BC Sheriff Services shut down and evacuated the Kamloops Court House around 9:00 a.m. this morning,” Winkles said. “The Police Dog Service Unit along with a bomb-sniffing dog searched the entire building and found no explosives.”

Winkels added the Kamloops courthouse was reopened to employees and the public about five hours later at 2:00 p.m. Thursday.

No other details have been released, and Winkels said police are still investigating who called in the threat. A CFJC reporter who was at courthouse to cover another story was not allowed inside and noticed at least one person leave the building in their robes.

In a statement, the British Columbia Provincial Court said people who had an appearance scheduled for Thursday who need information about their next steps should contact the Judicial Case Manager’s office by email.

People with information about this incident are being asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and reference file 2025-19249.
