COLLINS: Potential water issue is no joke

SOMETIMES WE ROLL MERRILY ALONG, paying no real concern to danger until it hits us in the face. Even the best-laid plans can fail, but at least there are some foundation stones that we can use to rebuild.

This week, the City of Kamloops, after extensive study, issued what I would call a caution flag. Our water treatment plant is getting a little closer to filling up and staff have told council drought conditions the past few years have only accelerated the problem. Council told residents this week that they better get serious about conserving water or there will be a hefty price to pay as new modules have to be put in to take care of the excess use.

Our system has room to expand but it isn’t cheap. And a ways down the road, we will have an immense pressure put on the plant. With Kamloops’ growth spurt and the number of houses being planned to deal with that growth, being forewarned is being forearmed.

At this stage, there is no panic, but the city is serving notice that this is not some conspiracy theory and we need to start to understand that environmental concerns are valid, and need to start being addressed now, not when the well has run dry.
