Kamloops building sector cools down in May

KAMLOOPS — It was a quieter month of May for the Kamloops building sector in 2025.

New numbers released by the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show nearly $13.3 million in permit activity was recorded in May 2025 — a quarter of the nearly $53.2 million in the same month last year.

Notable recordings in May 2025 include five single family dwelling permits worth $5.5 million and 13 commercial permits worth $3.7 million.

Year to date, the Kamloops building sector has recorded $79.2 million from 225 permits in the first five months of 2025, less than half of the $163.3 million recorded over 231 permits during the same time last year.

Kamloops also fell behind its housing unit pace from last year. Permits for 16 new residential units were recorded in May 2025, down from 139 in May 2024. Year to date, permits for 120 new units have been recorded throughout the first five months of 2025, less than half the 275 units during the same time last year.

The Kamloops construction sector had its third-busiest year in 2024 with $349.8 million in permits issued.
