Kamloops Toys “R” Us store appears set to close less than two years after reopening

KAMLOOPS — It appears the Toys “R” Us store in Kamloops is slated to close its doors, less that two years after it opened in a new location in Lower Sahali.

A sign on the door of the location at 500 Notre Dame Drive in Columbia Square is notifying people about the impending closure, though its not clear when the doors will shut for good.

An employee inside the store told CFJC Today Friday (June 13) they were told about the upcoming closure the day before, June 12. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment from CFJC Today.

The current Toys “R” Us location opened in Aug. 2023, and was one of 11 former Bed Bath & Beyond locations that were rebranded. It replaced the former Toys”R”Us location in the same plaza, which is now home to Nature’s Fare Markets.

According to media reports, a number of other Toys “R” Us stores have been closed across the country in recent months, including in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. An exact number of stores that either closed or are set to close this year is not immediately known.

Founded in 1984, Toys “R” Us Canada was operated by its American parent company until 2018. The Canadian division was sold to Fairfax Financial in 2018 after Toys “R” Us filed for bankruptcy and closed all U.S. locations as it sought protection from its creditors.

In 2021, Putman Investments, which also owns Sunrise Records, acquired Toys “R” Us Canada from Fairfax Financial.

The closure is another blow to the retail sector in Kamloops, following the closure of the Hudson’s Bay location at Aberdeen Mall. Employees at that store are still waiting to see what kind of a settlement they may get.
