Daytime closures at RW Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous extended to June 25

KAMLOOPS — Daytime closures on the Trans-Canada Highway between Sicamous and Salmon Arm will be extended by ten days to allow crews to continue working on the R.W. Bruhn replacement project.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit says the daytime closures, which were due to end Sunday (June 15), will continue until next Wednesday (June 25).

“This 10-day extension is to allow for additional rock-scaling work following the rockslide on June 5, west of the bridge,” a statement from the Ministry said. “For the safety of both workers and the public, this work must be completed during full highway closures.”

“These additional closures are necessary to reinforce the work completed last week, as well as reduce the risk of future rockslides in this area. Highway 1 remains safe for use outside closure periods.”

According to the ministry, the highway will be closed between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 16 until Saturday, June 21, and again between June 23 and 25. It said through traffic will continue to be rerouted onto Highway 97A and 97B, while local traffic will be accommodated with the assistance of traffic-control personnel.

“I know that folks probably aren’t thrilled about the June 25 push back date, but we’re building a bridge, or replacing a bridge, in our community, and it is short-term pain for long-term gain,” Sicamous Mayor Colleen Anderson said, during a June 11 Committee of the Whole meeting.

“We also recognize that projects aren’t going to go without issues.”

The Ministry says the summer construction schedule – which will feature full closures between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. as well as midnight to 4:00 a.m. – will be in effect from June 26 to Sept. 15. It’s expected to add between 30 and 45 minutes to travel time.

“At this time, no daytime full closures are planned during the summer 2025 months,” the ministry said. “Travellers are reminded to stay up to date on information about this closure and road conditions on alternative routes.”

The project will see crews replace the existing two-lane bridge with a new, four-lane structure, as well as improvements to 1.9 kilometres of the highway. Work is expected to wrap up in 2027.
