KAMLOOPS — A former Kamloops man convicted of a series of sex assaults has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

A jury found Joel Eric Carlson guilty of six counts of sexual assault last June. He was acquitted on a further four counts. The incidents date back as far as 2013 in communities throughout the Thompson-Okanagan region.

He was arrested in 2020 in Vernon, then again a year later in Chilliwack. After his initial arrest, RCMP issued a public safety notice and a plea for further potential victims to come forward.

“Having multiple victims come forward in Kamloops made this a complex investigation,” said Sgt. Nestor Baird of the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crimes Unit after the 2021 arrest. “This investigation and the number of victims who came forward following the public safety advisory reminds us of how many sexual assaults occur that are never reported to police for numerous reasons.”
