KAMLOOPS — According to Health Canada, since the introduction of the measles vaccine, measles infections have decreased by more than 99 per cent in this country.

However in recent years, vaccination rates have dropped below the benchmark for community immunity in some places. A rise in cases across Canada has prompted Interior Health to host a number of ‘catch-up’ clinics this spring for people who haven’t received the immunization yet, particularly children under the age of four.

Medical Health Officer Dr. Sanaz Vaseghi says measles is a highly contagious, viral disease. Common symptoms include a fever, rash and coughing, while more serious complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling that can results in neurological damage and even death.

“The good thing about measles is that it is a vaccine-preventable disease,” notes Dr. Vaseghi. “There is a safe and effective vaccine available that is offered in two doses. And in receiving the two doses, you can be protected close to 100 per cent.”

Recognizing the influence online misinformation may have on someone’s decision to get a vaccination or not, Interior Health says it’s best to speak to a qualified medical professional and rely on verified information from legitimate sources.

“It is much safer to get the vaccine than getting the actual disease, so if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate, our nurses are always available to address your questions and concerns,” she adds.

The next measles pop-up clinic is coming up on June 12, at the Kamloops Teddy Bear Mother Goose picnic from the John Tod Centre field, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Registration is not required and more information about immunization clinics can be found on Interior Health’s website.
