Crown to consider charges against Revelstoke RCMP officer after shooting death in 2023

REVELSTOKE, B.C. — B.C.’s police watchdog is forwarding its investigation of a 2023 shooting death in Revelstoke to Crown counsel for the consideration of charges.

The investigation stems from around 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2023 when Revelstoke RCMP members received a report of a stolen vehicle.

According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C., an officer found a man driving the stolen vehicle on Victoria Road East.

“There was an interaction and shots were fired by police,” the IIO stated. “Emergency Health Services attended but the man who had been driving the stolen vehicle was later pronounced deceased.”

In an update issued Tuesday (June 10), the IIO announced Jessica Berglund, its chief civilian director, reviewed the evidence and determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that one officer “may have committed offences in relation to the use of force.”

The matter is now forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) for charge consideration. To approve any charges, the IIO says the BCPS must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered and that prosecution be required in the public interest.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents in B.C. that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

While the matter is with Crown, the IIO says it will not make any further comments about the case.
