COURTENAY — A significant fine applies to a man convicted of harming vital fish habitat on his property south of Courtenay.

A Tuesday, June 10 Fisheries and Oceans Canada news release stated David Tingley was fined $60,000 after was found guilty earlier this year in provincial court in Courtenay for failing to correct illegal work on his property.

Tingley’s unsanctioned habitat alterations to the riverbank negatively impacted Trent River fish habitat, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

“The case stems from work carried out without Fisheries Act authorization over successive years on one of Mr. Tingley’s properties, which is bisected by the Trent River, an important fish bearing watercourse,” a news release from the agency stated.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada noted on May 15, 2020 Tingley was given one-month to remediate the damage he caused.

The fine will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund to protect Vancouver Island region salmon habitat, Fisheries and Oceans Canada stated.
