YKA reminding Kamloops residents to account for delays as Tranquille Road sewer project gets underway

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Airport (YKA) is reminding people to be mindful of major construction work along Tranquille Road that is set to begin to ramp up this week.

“Please allow extra time for travel to and from the Kamloops Airport due to detours and traffic changes,” YKA said in a statement, as work on the Tranquille Road Sanitary Main and Road Enhancement Project gets underway Monday (June 9).

For the first week, crews will be focused on the section of Crestline Street between Tranquille Road and Glenview Avenue. After that, the City says crews will begin working on Tranquille Road between Crestline and Schreiner Street.

Once the work zone moves to Tranquille Road all traffic will be detoured via Schreiner Street and Parkcrest Avenue, while transit buses will detour via Young Avenue before resuming the regular route at Crestline Street.

This particular detour route is expected to be in place for approximately six weeks, after which the City said there will be another major change to traffic patterns in early July as the work zone shifts further east to Downie Street.

At that time, all vehicle traffic will be detoured via Windbreak Street and Parkcrest Avenue. Transit buses will also detour via Windbreak and Young Avenue before once again resuming the regular route at Crestline.

Stage one of the project will see crews work between Crestline Street and Downie Street until the end of October. Construction will resume between Downie Street and Southill Street next year, with the entire project expected to be done by October 2026.

“It’s a pretty extensive project,” the City’s Project Delivery Manager Adam Gordon told CFJC Today. “That sewer line is quite far down, so in order to construct it, we need to dig quite a wide and deep trench so the road is going to be closed for through traffic.”

“Local-area traffic, as well as emergency services, will still be able to access their properties and get toward their work area.”

The truck and dangerous goods route was moved to Ord Road last Monday (June 2) to give those drivers time to get used to the new route.

The first phase of work along Tranquille Road west of Crestline toward Kamloops Airport was completed in 2017, while the second phase between Southill Street and 12th Street was completed in 2021.
