UPDATE: Coquihalla reopened between Hope and Merritt after ’emergency sinkhole repairs’

MERRITT, B.C. — (UPDATE: 7:40 p.m.): The Coquihalla Highway has reopened in both directions between Hope and Merritt after a nearly 24 hour closure that began Friday (June 6) night.

Highway maintenance contractor Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB) Nicola said there remains a fast lane closure in both directions on snowshed hill.

The highway was closed to all traffic at 9:00 p.m. Friday (June 6) night so crews could complete “emergency sinkhole repairs” near the Great Bear Snowshed.

“The Ministry, maintenance contractor, and Trans Mountain crews continue to work diligently to expedite repairs and open the highway as soon as safe to do so,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit told CFJC Today, in a statement earlier Saturday.

The Ministry added the sinkhole, located about 80 kilometres south of Merritt, was the result of “an isolated incident” related to boring work being done by Trans Mountain.

The two northbound lanes of the highway between Hope and Merritt have been closed since about 8:30 p.m. Thursday (June 6) night, while the southbound fast lane was closed at noon Friday “as a precaution.”

While the Coquihalla was closed, people were told to use Highway 1 or Highway 3 as a detour.
