KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service says a crew jumped on a new wildfire start just west of Kamloops Wednesday (June 4), quickly bringing it under control.

The fire was reported Wednesday evening at Cherry Bluff, on the southern shore of Kamloops Lake east of Tobiano.

Fire Information Officer Cali Nessman says one initial attack crew brought the blaze under control before it grew past 0.4 hectares.

“It was fairly visible to areas of Kamloops, displaying Rank 1 behaviour — that’s a smouldering ground fire — and pockets of Rank 2, which is a surface fire,” Nessman told CFJC Today. “[Thursday] we have one crew, the initial crew, returning for mop-up and extinguishing any hot spots.”

The fire is believed to have been caused by human activity, but Nessman says no exact cause has been identified.

She notes this is a good reminder that conditions are susceptible for wildfire ignitions.

“Of course, in Kamloops in the summers, we get hot and dry weather,” said Nessman. “(We’re) just making sure people are mindful if they are doing any burning at the moment. Category 2 and campfires are not prohibited so, if you are conducting any of those burns, make sure you have the proper tools on hand and make sure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving your area.”
