‘All available resources’ called in as BC Hydro works to restore power after Saturday windstorm

SHUSWAP — BC Hydro says it has called in all available resources as it works to restore power to hundreds of residents across the Southern Interior who are in the dark Sunday (June 1).

According to the latest BC Hydro estimates, there are 659 customers without power across the Thompson/Shuswap and another 495 in the Okanagan and the Kootenays. While that is considerably down from the few thousand people it was late Saturday night, some people have been without power for almost 24 hours.

“Our crews in the Southern Interior are continuing to make repairs and restore power as quickly and safely as possible following last night’s windstorm,” BC Hydro said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

“Crews from other areas of the province and all available contractors are also assisting. We’ll continue to provide the latest updates on these outages on our website.

Environment Canada had been forecasting wind gusts between 50 km/hr and 70 km/hr in the Kamloops area Saturday, and its calling for the wind gusts of 40 km/hr at times today.

BC Hydro is also reminding people to be careful if they come across downed power lines, noting a majority of the outages in the Interior were caused by downed wires.

“We also want to remind our customers that any downed power line is a danger,” the statement said. “If you come across a downed line, stay back at least 10 metres, and dial 911.”

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to restore power.”
