KAMLOOPS — A building near McDonald Park on Kamloops’ North Shore that was slated to be a new daycare will temporarily revert to its original use.

Effective June 2, the City of Kamloops says the Parkview Activity Centre at 500 McDonald Avenue will reopen for one-time or short-term bookings for community events, programs and group activities.

The announcement Wednesday (May 28) comes one month after the city’s application for provincial funding from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund to turn the Parkview Activity Centre into a new daycare was denied. It was one of three smaller projects announced as part of the Build Kamloops initiative.

In April, staff with B.C.’s Ministry of Education and Child Care told the city that the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund was oversubscribed. Natasha Hartson, the city’s acting social, housing and community development manager told CFJC Today the ministry had to make difficult decisions.

Meantime, Kamloops council has directed staff to explore longer-term health and social options for the Parkview Activity Centre building, such as a medical clinic or a space for child care.

“While we continue to evaluate the potential for the site, this direction on short-term use ensures the facility remains a vibrant part of the community and adds capacity to a variety of programming, whether it is a special occasions or used by art groups, sport clubs, or cultural organizations,” Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation and wellness manager, stated.
