KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers have signed the first player from the 2025 WHL draft class.

Winnipeg defenceman, Mateo Ferreira, has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. The 14-year-old was taken by the Blazers in the first round, 11th overall.

Ferreira scored 21 goals and 70 points in 32 games with the Winnipeg Bruins U15 AAA Gold team in the 2024-25 season, which was second among defencemen and 11th overall in league scoring.

“It’s dream come true getting selected in the first round and obviously even better feeling being drafted by such a great organization like Kamloops,” Ferreira told CFJC Today post-draft.

“I hope I can bring an impact to the team and hopefully through my years of playing we can make it to the playoffs and do some big things.”

“He’s extremely intelligent. He put up incredible numbers as a defenceman,” added Blazers Head Coach and General Manager, Shaun Clouston. “He’s very competitive, and he breaks pucks out, he advances pucks and he makes plays. He can find all his options.”

Ferreira was at Blazers development camp this past weekend, and becomes the first player from the 2010-born draft class to sign with the hockey club.

“We’ve had the ability to track and watch Mateo a lot over the last few seasons,” Clouston added. “We look forward to watching Mateo’s game continue to grow and develop and are excited for the day he is a full-time player with the Kamloops Blazers.”
