No injuries as Kamloops firefighters make quick work of shed fire near McArthur Island

KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 1:20 p.m.): Three trailer homes near McArthur Island were damaged by a two-alarm shed fire Sunday (May 25) morning, and Kamloops firefighters say one of the structures was likely spared because of the way it was built.

Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc said the large response was needed as firefighters weren’t sure what they would be arriving to. Crews from Kamloops Fire Rescue Station 2 in Brocklehurst were on scene within minutes, he added.

“Reports came in of one trailer, possibly two, on fire. Crews arrived and it was a shed in behind the two trailers that was fully engulfed and spreading to a couple of trailers,” he told CFJC Today.

“Crews did a quick knock down to stop the fire from spreading to the trailers but unfortunately the shed was completely destroyed, and there was a little bit of exposure to the trailers.”

A third trailer, located on the other side of a fence, also suffered some damage to the exterior.

No injuries were reported, and Uzeloc said the trailer closest to the shed – the green one, pictured above – was built using fire-resistant Hardie board sidings, which he noted likely saved that structure.

He added its an example of FireSmart principles at work.

“With the use of more fire resistant products, this is a great example of how that Hardie board is very conducive to protecting homes and property from fire,” Uzeloc said.

It’s not clear how the fire started, but Uzeloc said investigators will scour through the remains of the shed to try and determine a cause.

“We’re going to make sure the fire is out first and then start looking,” Uzeloc said. “Hopefully we can talk to the owner and see what was in that shed and try to make a determination from that.”
