Three-month-long paving project scheduled for section of Kamloops’ Westsyde Road

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is moving ahead with a plan to repave a roughly three-kilometre section of Westsyde Road, starting on Monday (May 26).

Project Delivery Manager Adam Gordon says crews will begin working at Franklin Road — near the Chevron gas station — and gradually make their way north toward Harrington Road near The Dunes golf course.

“Work will begin at Franklin Road in the northbound outside lane, move to the northbound inside lane, followed by the inside southbound and outside southbound lanes,” Gordon said, noting paving work is expected to wrap up by August.

“It will be done in phases going from one side to the other and from one lane to the other, but it’s a long enough stretch that we wouldn’t propose to close one lane for the entire length of the entire time.”

Gordon says the City of Kamloops has contracted BA Dawson Blacktop to complete this work. Crews are expected to on site between Monday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some weekend scheduled, as required.

“This is just simply to do with the condition of the asphalt,” Gordon added. “There is no coupling of other works going on, whether it be utilities or beautification, as we have for the Tranquille job.”

There will be some impacts to transit while work is underway, most notably during milling and paving, with updated route information available here.

Gordon said there may be some temporary impacts to driveway access. Affected residents will be given advance notice in case of such a disruption. Pedestrians are also being urged to watch for temporary sidewalk closures while work is underway.

“We know there are detours available but Westsyde Road is the best equipped to handle the speed and capacity of motorists in the area,” Gordon added. “We would just ask that residents to be patient while work is ongoing and we will endeavour to keep traffic flowing as best we can.”

“It’s going to be a dynamic project and so I would suggest people keep current on the city’s website and we’ll provide updates as we can.”
