KAMLOOPS — Two-time Stanley Cup champion Darryl Sydor has been open about his battle with addiction and his path to wellness and recovery.

Now his family is getting involved in an attempt to encourage and inspire others.

The Sydors are partnering with Day One Society to host a fundraising breakfast on Monday (May 26) at the Delta Hotel.

“We don’t know what to expect,” Darryl said. “We’re going to tell our story.

“It’s an opportunity to share our journey, not only myself as an addict, but also how a family deals with the other part of it. That’s important.”

A Journey of Hope and Healing with the Sydors will feature conversation with Darryl and his wife, Shar, along with video contribution from their children.

After an 18-season career in the NHL and with an ownership stake in the Kamloops Blazers, Darryl is familiar with a place in public eye.

Shar is less experienced in the spotlight, but feels the cause is worth speaking out on.

“I just would like to make it easier for people to come forward when they’re needing help,” Shar said. “There’s such a stigma around it. It’s really difficult for people to ask for help. When you’re in it, you’re so shameful that you don’t recognize how much compassion people have for you and how many people will be there for you.”

Day One Society offers services and programs to youth and young adults experiencing challenges with substance abuse.

The event is sold out, but donations are being accepted on the Day One website.
